Adult Programs:

Do you know of an adult with Autism and/or a developmental disability who is looking for a program to help them advance? Valley Achievement Center in Bakersfield offers a wide variety of adult programs and services to adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. If you know of any adults who could use our services, please contact us. We would love to answer any questions you may have or schedule you for a tour of our facility.

Independent Living Skills (ILS)

valley achievement center for those with autism. adult day program student in BakersfieldIndependent Living Skills Program (ILS) prepares individuals, 18 or older, with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Intellectual Disabilities (ID), and/or other Development Disabilities to transition to independent living.  The purpose of this program is to provide individuals with the knowledge, training, and skills to move from a parent/care giver home to a more independent living environment.  This person-centered transition training program, provided at home and in the community, will focus on areas that will allow the client to transition successfully into an independent living environment, such as teaching the client how to improve:

  • Functional daily living skills
  • Money management
  • Self-advocacy
  • Emergency response
  • Safety awareness
  • Other services as needed

Supported Living Services (SLS)

Supported Living Services provides in home day services and support to disabled adults to allow the individual to reside in his or her own home. Services include assistance with:

  • Daily living skills
  • Money management
  • Self-advocacy
  • Emergency response
  • Safety awareness
  • Transportation
  • Other services as needed

Professional, Vocational, Social Adjustment (PVSA)

PVSA provides training to adults with autism and other developmental disabilities to develop functional skills to enhance employability, employment outcomes, and/or job maintenance. After an initial assessment to identify the client’s barriers to employment, PVSA training is provided in a one-to-one environment to reduce and eliminate identified barriers.

PVSA training includes training in the following areas, as indicated for the particular client:

  • Appropriate interaction in the workplace
  • Effective communication
  • Transportation
  • Job search
  • Interviewing
  • Professional self-presentation

Individual Supported Employment (SEP)

The Individual Supported Employment Program provides services for disabled adults to obtain and successfully maintain employment. Our Job Developer works diligently on behalf of each client to identify quality job opportunities and then assists the client to secure employment. Once a client is placed in a position, our Job Coach provides training, support and supervision on the job to allow the client to transition over time to work as independently as possible.

Group Supported Employment

The Group Supported Employment program provides employment opportunities for adults with autism and other developmental disabilities who lack the required skills for individual employment. Clients in the Group Supported Employment day program work as part of a small group under the supervision of the Job Coach. The Job Coach works with the individuals employed in the group to understand:

  • Team work
  • Work expectations
  • Job duties
  • Appropriate communication skills
  • Socialization skills
  • Industry standards
  • Self-advocacy in the workplace

Power Start: Behavioral Management Program

adult program daily living skillsPower Start is a behavior management program that provides on-site programming to adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, starting at age 18. Through a person-centered planning model, Power Start provides individuals with the knowledge and skills to improve functional living skills, including:

  • Daily living skills
  • Proactive strategies for behavior management
  • Self-help skills
  • Community and environmental awareness
  • Self-advocacy
  • Relational building skills

The Power Start day program operates using a structured environment and behavioral approach including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles, research based strategies, and daily schedules. Power Start also provides:

  • Vocational training
  • Mobility training
  • Employment exploration and preparation
